The state of New York offers the most programs in the field of communication that have been designated by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (ACEJMC). There are nine different institutions to choose from, and of these, Syracuse University offers the most undergraduate and graduate program options. This university is known for their strong alumni network in the field of journalism, digital media, and broadcasting. With the exception of Iona College, all of these universities provide disciplines in Journalism to study.

Public Relations is another popular discipline that is offered at multiple universities. New York City hosts the most accredited schools in the state - City University of New York, Columbia University, and New York University.

Specific programs that have not been accredited by the ACEJMC since their previous review include a Master of Science in Communications at the University of Syracuse and a Bachelor of Arts in Media and Strategic Communication at Iona College. New York City is the biggest location in terms of overall population with over 8.6 million residents, and it features the largest media and television markets in the United States. The next most populated city is Buffalo with over 252,000 people.

The state of New York, fueled by New York City being the media capital of the United States, is generally at the top of all employment and salary figures within digital media and communications opportunities. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, reporters and correspondents see the most employment in the state with over 4,500 workers. This is over 1,000 more workers estimated in this specific career than California, who ranks second.

On a salary basis, they receive the highest of any state with $81,930 through annual mean wage, which is also significantly higher than California. As an alternative, broadcast news analysts are also at the top in terms of employment in New York and one of the highest-paying states with over $111,340 as the annual mean salary.

This is the third-highest state in terms of employment and annual mean salary for public relations specialists. There are over 25,760 employed in this field, which is only less than California and Texas, and it is significantly higher than the next spot, the District of Columbia.

Average salaries for PR specialists are estimated at $78,230, which is on par with other northeastern states and is only smaller to New Jersey. The New York City-Newark-Jersey City metropolitan area has the most employment alone with over 24,250 representing this industry.

Compared to California, there are over 5,000 more workers that represent positions in advertising and promotional management at over 7,800 employed. Salaries are at the top of the country with an annual mean wage of $184,920 according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics

The New York Press Association (NYPA) provides an avenue for print and digital advertising with quick and efficient methods for advertisers to target their audience. They will evaluate and determine how to advertise goods and services on a variety of platforms that are connected within their network.

NYPA has a connection over 325 different publishers across the state that feature over 15 million different subscribers and readers.
